Super Bowl LVIII Β· Chiefs down 3, 1:53 left, own 25

Updated Β· Situation checked against nflverse play-by-play Β· Sources

Short answer

Before the Chiefs–49ers Super Bowl overtime came Kansas City's last drive of regulation: down 19–16, 1:53 left, at its own 25, two timeouts each. You call every snap from there, and if you tie it, you play the overtime too. Your calls are graded against Andy Reid's, which score in the 72nd percentile in our engine.

The situation

Super Bowl LVIII, February 11, 2024, in Las Vegas. Jake Moody's 53-yard field goal had just put San Francisco ahead 19–16. Kansas City starts at its own 25 with 1:53 left and two timeouts; San Francisco has two as well.

A field goal ties it and a touchdown probably wins it. Score a touchdown too early, though, and the 49ers get time for their own answer. And a tie isn't the end: playoff overtime under the 2022 rule gives both teams the ball.

How the real drive went, play by play

Travis Kelce caught 9 yards, Mahomes scrambled for 3 and got out of bounds, Noah Gray caught 12 to the Kansas City 49, and Justin Watson caught 8 to the San Francisco 43. After an incompletion, Jerick McKinnon caught 7 on 3rd-and-2 to the 36, and Kansas City used a timeout at 0:40.

Mahomes scrambled for 3, a pass fell incomplete at 0:21, and on 3rd-and-7 Kelce caught 22 yards and was pushed out at the 11 with 0:16 left. San Francisco used a timeout at 0:10, a throw to Kelce fell incomplete, and on 2nd down with 0:06 left Harrison Butker kicked a 29-yard field goal. 19–19, with 0:03 left.

The calls that decided it

The last call in regulation is the one to think about. On 2nd down at the 11 with 0:06 and a timeout left, Kansas City kicked. One more throw to the end zone could have won it outright, and an incompletion would still leave a second or two and the timeout for the field goal. A sack or a catch in bounds would end the game.

Then overtime. San Francisco got the ball first and kicked a field goal. Mahomes answered with a 75-yard drive, converting a 4th-and-1 with an 8-yard run, and hit Mecole Hardman for the winning touchdown with 0:03 left in the first overtime period. Kansas City won 25–22. In this game you play the overtime with the real rules: both teams get a possession, then the next score wins.
