Short answer
The ChiefsβEagles Super Bowl final drive started tied 35β35 with 5:15 left, Kansas City at its own 25 and two timeouts each. The trick is that scoring isn't enough: whoever has the ball last probably wins. You call every snap, and your calls are graded against Andy Reid's, which score in the 50th percentile in our engine.
The situation
Super Bowl LVII, February 12, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona. Jalen Hurts had just run in a touchdown and the two-point conversion to tie it 35β35. Patrick Mahomes, playing on a sprained ankle, starts at his own 25 with 5:15 left.
Both teams have two timeouts. Tied with five minutes, the goal isn't just points: it's points with as little time as possible left for Philadelphia's offense.
How the real drive went, play by play
Kansas City mixed runs and short passes. Isiah Pacheco ran for 3, JuJu Smith-Schuster caught 10 and got out, Pacheco ran 2, and Travis Kelce caught 7. On 3rd-and-1 Pacheco ran 10 yards to the Philadelphia 43.
Then at 2:55 Mahomes, on the bad ankle, scrambled up the middle for 26 yards to the 17. Pacheco ran 2 more, and a pass to Smith-Schuster on 2nd-and-8 gained nothing. On 3rd-and-8 from the 15 the pass fell incomplete, but a defensive holding flag gave Kansas City a first down at the 11 with 1:54 left.
On the next snap Jerick McKinnon ran 9 yards and went down at the 2 instead of scoring, so Kansas City could run the clock. Philadelphia used its last timeout, Mahomes knelt twice, and Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with 0:08 left. Kansas City won 38β35.
The calls that decided it
The decision this drive is famous for is McKinnon stopping at the 2. Score there and Philadelphia gets the ball down 7 with about 1:40 left and a timeout, enough to tie it. Go down and you can kneel the clock away and kick a chip shot, at the cost of a little risk on the kick.
Earlier, it's pace. With five minutes, Kansas City ran the ball and kept it in bounds, and that's why the penalty and the kneel-downs could finish it. Hurry and you leave Hurts time; dawdle and you run out of downs. You'll make the same choices here, including whether to go down short of the goal line.
